New update 27 Sep 2010

Testing all this week, dont miss out, if you have 8 tags you are good to go.

Looking forward to having Matt Thurman join us next week on the full time staff team, its been very busy with just 3 of us. Matt has spent most of his time training in Oxford but has now moved to Nottingham. He will be doing his Shodan test in November.

A quick note on attitude

The longer I live the more I realise the impact of attitude in on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think say or do. It is more important than appearance, gifted-ness or skill. It will make or break a company, a church or a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past, we cannot change the fact that people will act a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string that we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% of what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you……….. We are in charge of our attitudes.

New update 23rd Sep 2010

Testing starts next week, nearly everone should be good to go. Try not leave it to the end of the week as things are going to be busy for us and an even spread of testing all week will help us out. I am still away enjoying a short break but keep getting into trouble because I keep talking about the dojo. Ooops.

No more news for you just now so I will leave you with this defenition of success by:

Ralph Waldo Emerson

To laugh often and much;

To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;

To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;

To appreciate beauty;

To find the best in others;

To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;

To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived;

This is to have succeeded.

Stop Press -Black Belt Test

I would like to aknowledge Tom Wade today who with very little notice was called forward to take his Shodan Test. This is very unusual as normally students have plenty of time to prepare for such a taxing event. However Tom is leaving us today to go to university for which we all wish him well, he will of course be returning from time to time during holiday periods.

It was accepted that Tom would leave as 1st Kyu Brown and he would then train on an opportunity basis to eventually test to Shodan at some point in the future. About a week ago after watching Tom in class, I thought he may have a chance to perform at the high standard we require for Shodan. I was not certain if we had time but I gave him the chance. Displaying the kind of spirit I expect of Black Belts Tom seized the opportunity and went for it. Since then he has trained every opportunity he has had, and he has worked very hard at it. Note for Sensei Tom Gutteridge at last night’s class, Good job working Tom Wade, he found it very tough but it had the desired effect.

Tom has been with us since he was a junior and today I was very proud of the standard that he produced. I want to publicly acknowledge that here, as given the late notice of the test we did not have the customary crowd of fellow students in support.

 Great job Tom, very well done, good luck at university although you won’t need it, and we look forward to seeing you back on the mat at Christmas.

News update 13th Sep

Curriculum all this week and next week. Testing starts on Mon 27th Sep so everyone has had plenty of time to get 8 black tags. If not use your catch up classes

If I can generate enough interest I am proposing a Shudokan camping trip next year. Somewhere central to make it easy for all UK Shudokan schools to attend. Over a week-end it should be pretty cheap, all you will need is a tent and sleeping bag. It would be a good opportunity for the UK schools to get together in a social environment and have some fun without it costing the earth. Juniors and Dragons welcome with mums and dads. Let me know what you think and if you would be interested.

I conducted Dragon and Junior Dan gradings in Preston over the week-end. They did a fantastic job check out the videos.

A big WELCOME to Matt Thurman who will be joining the team as a full time employee in the very near future. Nice to have another pair of hands to help out. All being well on his first day of employment we will throw him out of an aeroplane form 16000 feet. It’s pretty exciting working here.

 Still need lots of names for the firewalk on 19th Nov. Bring along friends family and work colleagues, £10 per head all goes to CLIK Sargent charity, caring for young people with cancer.

This week we talk about the importance of extending friendship to people who are new to our school. We also discuss how to go about building relationships with the RIGHT people if we are the ones that find ourselves in a new environment. Confidence is a major focus for this week to make it easier for our children to make new friends when returning to school.

Junior Mat Chats for September

Life skills training

Dear parent/carer

In the month of September we are discussing the following topics with the children to help then get back into the routine of school, and for some, to help them cope with starting a new school.

WEEK 1.         BACK TO SCHOOL/NEW SCHOOL. This week we discuss the importance of establishing positive routines, setting new goals and re-establishing contact with old friends. For those who are starting new schools we encourage that change should be looked upon as an exciting experience that provides us with new opportunities.

WEEK 2.        MAKING NEW FRIENDS. This week we talk about the importance of extending friendship to people who are new to our school. We also discuss how to go about building relationships with the RIGHT people if we are the ones that find ourselves in a new environment. Confidence is a major focus for this week to make it easier for our children to make new friends.

WEEK 3.        BULLIES. This week we discuss with the children various ways of dealing with bullies using both verbal and physical strategies.

WEEK 4.        HOME WORK. Finally this month we discuss the importance of prioritising tasks. Homework may not be fun but lets get it done and out of the way. Also lets do the best job we can.

The subjects covered this month are designed to make the transition back to school easier for our students. Please help us by participating and re-enforcing these subjects outside of the dojo.
